so basically what i heard from people who read the novel and this is SPOILERS ALERT…………………………….
Of course maxi feels like its her fault and now she think Riften will divorce her because her father is putting lies in her head, she does end up leaving though cuz her father manipulates her, when she leaves, she gets abused again and gets hit with a whip by her father …is going to get dark from here on out and maxi will be in depression mode, so basically maxi is back to square one =(…….. i don’t blame her, the poor girl been traumatized and been abuse mentally and physically that’s something that cant be fixed easily right away because she been going through it since she was a child, and later on riften will save her and he will find out everything about her abusive father and why she acted the way she did… this will be a whole drama when riften and the others finds out about maxi abuse
Y’all need to understand the human condition that change happens slowly, especially in people who carry deep-rooted conditioning and trauma, and it is never a straight line. There are fall-backs, inner struggles, and the general fact that we all get tired working on ourselves. Maxi has been consistently getting stronger in character because she was away from her father, and now she is shocked both by the news and the fact that this abusive bstard is here again.
Riftan is not different. He climbed the social ladder with great effort, always afraid of not being wealthy or noble enough for his wife, both terrified of the other’s opinion.
Frankly, try explaining to a man of tradition why you can pitch in with bills, and he’ll lose his mind because to him that means you deem him incapable and a failure as a provider. Fear prevents communication – they got married without knowing each other, of course, there’ll be some trust issues when they aren’t confident in themselves either.
From “stuttering fool” to a mage who saved a whole castle is a big ass leap in character growth. She is loved by her people; she used to have no one. RN, it is Riftan’s turn to face some hard truths, not hers. You can’t expect to see growth based on the number of chapters, but learn to see it in words and actions. It starts with small steps. The author is doing a great job.
I can’t believe I forgot it was the duke who told Maxi the news… the manhwa is definitely changing some things and omitting others for the record. Highly recommend reading the novel for Maxi’s point of view and to compare the manhwa from the novel. The Maxi bashing makes me a bit sad… I don’t think people understand that this isn’t your typical manhwa where the FL wakes up one day superpowered, full of mental fortitude, and able to overcome all of her obstacles with ease. There are plenty of manhwa out there just like that if that’s what you’re looking for, but UTOT is different. No transmigration, no do-overs, no second life. She’s learning from her mistakes in real time.
Some Maxi background spoilers/lore just fyi…
She has CPTSD from a lifetime of physical and emotional abuse. To put it in perspective, the duke whipped her when she failed to recite her oral lessons properly (in an attempt to correct her stutter). The trauma she endured isn’t something you just “get over.” For people in the real world, it takes years of therapy and often psychiatric help to learn how to manage. Maxi obviously does not have access to that. It doesn’t make her decisions selfish either. She does not “need” to listen to Riftan; as Agnes said, she is capable of making her own decisions, even if Riftan dislikes them. She is learning how to be independent. She followed him because she was terrified he would be injured and just wanted a glimpse of him. We’ve all made bad decisions before. She is also very naive because of her isolated, neglected upbringing. She *literally* only had her nanny, who was also cold to her. No friends.
The duke didn’t even provide her with a proper noble woman’s education (hence why Ruth had to teach her about currency and why she had no idea how to manage a household), and he refused to let her leave the castle because he considered her an embarrassment. She has been taught under strict Catholic doctrine, which also complicates her thoughts. This is medieval Europe… women were the property of their father and then their husband upon marriage. To hide his abuse and Maxi away, he spread rumors that he doted on her and favored her and made excuses for her absences when she wasn’t with him and Rosetta (her sister) at banquets and balls. Her character is very layered. Maxi is ashamed of herself because of the abuse, which is why she never told anyone. She thinks everyone will perceive her differently, in a negative light, if it’s revealed she’s not actually a cherished daughter but a throw-a-way. But Maxi has been making great strides.
Now imagine facing your worst fear (her abusive father), who then delivers the worst news imaginable in the harshest way possible. And now Maxi is also terrified Riftan will discard her because she failed her most basic duty as a wife (giving Riftan an heir). This is reasonable grounds for divorce. Would’ve helped if Riftan told her himself, but he wanted to spare her the pain and grief and endure it all himself (very misguided, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions).
Highly recommend reading the novel chapters like I said. 🙂
I get the FL is somewhat frustrating. However she is trying to be useful. She has a stutter and no support from her parent. Never been loved and always been abused. In a marriage she feels is a sham bc of her status. She has never been able to be comfortable.

What frustrates me with the MC is that she is a fool and quite selfish. She does not regard the ML’s feelings. I understand everything is new to her and she wants to help but the ML has been telling her to slow down even when she was wielding magic or when she want to join the war, but no…..MC wants to be a savior. She wants to save everyone’s life and she want to prove to herself and everybody else that she can do more even if her life was literally at death’s door.

She has her feats too especially in saving all those people, though at the cost of her own child. Her trying to do what she can to be worth to Riftan more than she is now(she is already precious as hell to him) is already the character development we need progressing gradually.

Just look at what happened at the barracks between Maxi and the guy who had beef with Riftan. We from outside can shout how much she needs to grow up n all, but if any of us were in her position… lol. Not sure id even try to do anything, just being away from the father would do me enough good to just live silently in Anatol. So i do commend her for trying even if it puts her in danger. Though, Riftan is also completely in the clear to behave like that in the last chapters. I assume what hit him even more was the miscarriage.
Ok, thats enough outta me. I just had to put my 2 cents on the matter with people calling Maxi a fool n all with no character growth. It just seemed short-sighted to me like she wasn’t being seen properly. Regardless, to each their own in their opinions.
im hoping this is a grow up moment cause for 144 chapters we have seen 0 character growth, yea she fought monsters but now shes back to square one. Im really hoping we see her stand up for herself and Riftan find out about her dead beat father

Seriously, how can she still be terrified of her father after facing monsters and all kinds of danger? It’s so obvious the story is being forced just to create drama 🙄🙄 The usual clichés! On top of that, she is just being stupid and acting without thinking about the consequences…and when she finally realizes that her actions lead to consequences (like the miscarriage), she starts with the same old self-deprecating talk. She doesn’t listen to those who tell her they love her or that she’s a good person; she only listens to her own nonsense fears. Quite stupid after 144 chapters!!!
