My speculation… Dietrich pulled Eva away from high society in the OG novel to protect her. I think he never truly loved Seraphina, but knew she was the master manipulator and entered into a fake relationship with her to unmask her in front of everyone. At least… that’s what I hope. I understand he loves Eva and wants to protect her, but I wish he would consider her feelings/perspective more often. Especially if he believes the false rumors about her. He’s punishing her for no reason. It seems like he doesn’t truly know her.
