@coconutgirlie i know im late as hell but ur so wrong about this, the emperor had a previous empress which he had the crown prince with, then he lost her and it is said that around 16 years later after he lost her he met the current empress, they got married and had twins, so the crown prince and the empress are indeed close in age. he probably calls her mother because of like honorifics.

the empress and emperor met on her debut which was likely that they were around the same age (empress 16-18, emperor 16-18). In the art it showed them being younger (obvi) both looking around the same age. they most likely had the crown prince together. The Empress could jus be a young looking mother ^^
Do not forget that the emperor had a previous wife and his first child that is the crown prince. The actual empress is his stepmother and with the emperor they already have twins children whose are the step brothers of the crown prince.
i get that he calls her mother because she is married to his father but they are clearly so similar in age that it’s still head-scratchy… but he is clearly only interested in her handmaiden so it’s okay i guess lol
