In stories like these, the one who threatens the female lead’s life is also usually the male lead, and it’s one of the tropes I hate the most.
Unfortunately it doesn’t help that this trash is now the female lead’s “brother”, since they’re not blood related and in Victorian fantasy stories this is no hindrance for marriage 🙁
Any man who threatens an unarmed (and usually much weaker) woman’s life in any way is the worst scum and not to be trusted, EVER! It’s criminal behaviour.
Authors who try to make readers believe that men like that are desirable husband-material as long as they merely look attractive, are stupid. Repeatedly reading this trope over and over and is dangerous – by getting used to it, both boys and girls might come to think that dangerous behaviour like this is excusable.
But think what could happen if someone is startled when something touches their shoulder from behind all of a sudden, and they instinctively try to push it away with their arm – if it’s a sharp blade, the wound inflicted by this could be dangerously deep.
