I don’t normally leave reviews like this on the main page of a series, but I was a bit surprised that this one doesn’t have more reviews?
The tone of this story is shockingly grim in places, so definitely read with a preparation for pain and tragedy. That said, it’s definitely the “angst with a happy ending” genre. Things are truly terrible, horrific, and hopeless in places, but the story is about overcoming those hardships.
The story does have places that are funny, but I wouldn’t read this one if you’re currently in the mood for a comedy. It’s definitely more serious than not.
Overall, the pacing and writing of the story are very well done. There are a lot of minor time-skips that would feel a bit jarring in a different story, but they work well in the flow of this one.
The protagonists are all entertaining and likeable, although because of the pace of the story, the character you’re likely to grow the most attached to is the primary protagonist (and by extension, his daughter). It’s not to say the rest of the cast doesn’t get screentime, they do, but they’re primarily there in supporting roles. But they’re a likeable and engaging enough cast to grow attached to them regardless.
It’s definitely a good read and it has some refreshing twists on the isekai genre. I’d say my biggest beef with the story is the potential romance developing between Jun-ho and Tirna, solely because it feels pretty random and forced. The age difference is blah to me compared to how little effort has been put into developing any sort of actual chemistry between the two characters, other than “Tirna is good at babysitting Ah-Young”. I’m hopeful that this plot-line doesn’t actually develop into a romance and ends solely with Tirna having a crush and getting over it or being rejected. I’m not a fan of age-gap relationships, but what annoys me more than a problematic relationship is a poorly written one. I’m hoping that the poorly established chemistry between the pair of them is just a purposeful foreshadowing to the relationship not going in that direction, which would be nice and match well with the overall good writing this series contains.
Give it a read if you like epic dramas with high stakes and good writing. Also there’s a lot of body horror lol, so there’s your warning for that.
