Maybe sue thought that if her new fam knew about the bruises :
1) they would think she’s a naughty kid who used to be disciplined;
2) they would think she’s undeserving of love because she is somewhat broken;
3) she doesn’t want to trouble nor worry them
I can kinda understand why she would try to hid her wounds. She’s just a little kid and growing up like that probably made her feel she can’t trust anyone and just a few days of kindness can’t wash away the distrust imbedded into her.

and the maid, well for now we only know:
* she regarded the duke´s sister highly/really liked her
* she´s a commoner
* she´s still at the level of normal jealousy/frustration. Should you take that out on a child? No. Does happen all teh time with siblings/parent-child/strangers? Very much.
And from the feel of the story (and the fact that I´m tired of the “evil insider”) I predict that the maid will come to like her too, after the feeling of “What kinda idiot was I???” has finished
