i think Anastacius was being taunted and had words whispered to him from Aeternitas and he eventually went along with it. he wanted to die (claude stabbed him) but Aeternitas saved his life by possessing him. he continued letting himself die (scene where he says u have nowhere to go now come to me and “we will die together”) which means it seems theyve gone through a bit together and Anastacius wanted to die and protect his daughter Jeanette from Aeternitas too but as u saw, Claude stepped in and told lucas to kill Aeternitas before he could reach Anastacius. anyway thats my take on it
