The duke got a contract with the “orphanage” so that they will give the “orphanage” some money in exchange for “liliana” to be raised well as Eliot’s future fiance since Liliana’s true family is already gone. But the “orphanage” which is liliana’s aunt didn’t raise her well. In the novel this soon only discovered when they are in marritable age. So here the FL basically made it faster than before the novel.
