OH MY GOD. I’m starting to realize why Riftan is treating her like a fragile doll. All those times that Maxi couldn’t attend functions, the Duke has constantly excused her due to her “frail health” and to seem like an overprotective father who didn’t let her poor daughter out because he was afraid her daughter’s health might fail. When in reality, he was ashamed of Maxi and didn’t want her to tarnish their reputation and it didn’t help that he constantly beat her.
To the rest of the country and to riftan, Maxi’s frail and delicate is deeply exaggerated. Hence, his overprotectiveness here.
We all agree Maxi is insecure, but I’d wager Riftan is also insecure. Having come from nothing, he fears that Maxi would find him inadequate and so he overcompensates with jewels and treating her like a princess because he thinks that if he doesn’t provide them, Maxi would leave him.

That’s a make of a “good” person, to clarify those things and to set some boundaries w another woman’s man. But yet another ✔️ that shows she’s not a “good person”.

Agnes eventually becomes the catalyst that leads to the greatest hardship in their marriage AND their separation.
