Going to the battlefield was pure foolishness. Knights train for years, even mages train for years. And in such a short time, she thought she had it all figured out. Very stupid.
Poor Riftan is frustrated with worry. I get that he shouldn’t shout at her but he wasn’t raised that way. He’s rowdy and rough.
I just think she could have proven herself by taking care of their domaine since usually lords have a batch of villagers to take care of. But this is the plot so it is what it is.
I will never support her doing what she did.
I feel like she’s very naive and selfish. I understand that she wants to help and prove herself but she has a child. She knew her mana would get depleted yet she still risks her life and her child.
??? what? it’s her responsibility as a noble to protect her people, specially in such a dire situation when everyone under her is about to be gruesomely crushed. you only feel like criticizing her, really, because it has been thoroughly impressed upon you that she’s weak and has poor health, if she was a healthy powerful FL and had pulled this stunt despite not feeling well, you’d for sure be praising her instead. not to mention, if she hadn’t done this, even if at the cost of her health and perhaps her unborn child, it is highly likely she’d be dead. the monsters would have likely massacred her people and then dispersed looking for stragglers… so, is dying without trying to help better cause she “preserved” herself? really? that sounds like bs to me, innit. she can get pregnant again at any point, but preserving her and her subjects lives is obviously the most important thing.
Actually, she didn’t. She didn’t know she was pregnant (it was very early stages, and remember, Maxi said herself in an earlier chapter that her cycle has never been regular, which has made conceiving difficult), and she didn’t know this would deplete her mana. It never crossed her mind that she would suffer these drawbacks. She is a novice mage and still has much to learn. I’ve read the novels. She was only trying to save her people, which I think is heroic, especially given the dire circumstances. She could have chosen to run, as Garrow and Uly were urging her to do. But had she not collapsed the cliff and obliterated the monster army, the castle would have been captured and everyone in it killed, leaving an even larger army of undead for the rest of the Allied Forces to deal with while retaking the castle.
I’ve always thought that this sacrifice of hers (unknown to her at the time as I said) was worth it for the greater good. The miscarriage acted as a sort of buffer to protect Maxi’s own life force, as I understand it. But the mana depletion and her miscarriage will be explained more in the coming chapters. Maxi is definitely naive, understandably, but she’s the farthest thing from selfish. Diverting her escape to topple the cliff was incredibly selfless. Remember, she’s been isolated and abused her whole life, She is desperate to prove her worth, above all to herself, because she’s been told she’s worthless her whole life. Right now, she doesn’t even believe she’s worthy of being Riftan’s wife, though she loves him and is of a much higher status (a duke’s daughter ranks right below a princess. If she had been loved by her father, this arranged marriage between never would have happened, but she was a convenient chess piece her father used to put the task of killing the dragon onto Riftan and the Remdragon Knights. I highly recommend reading Riftan’s story for the backstory there). Hence why she compares herself to Agnes so much. It’s all part of her character arc. Sorry for the rant haha 🙂
