The reason Riftan treats her like this is because he fears that she hates her life and is forced to live a “simple” life in comparison to what she lived with her father. Riftan wants to give Maxi the best life he can and he thinks she felt forced to join them on the campaign because no one else could do it.
As for what happens in the future, I read the novels a while ago, but I remember that Maxi meets the other women staying behind and when asked if some women wanted to volunteer to be nurses for the soldiers. Maxi volunteers, along with some other noble women. At some point a few months from now, the enemy troops (the monsters) get closer to the area where Maxi is. So the ruler of the area orders everyone to leave the area. Maxi fearing for Riftan and everyone fighting declines and remains behind.
This part gets super sad as later on Maxi uses her powers to stop a goblin from attacking the Remdragons and is injured. She wakes up to find out that she had miscarried. Riftan sick with grief sends her to go stay with the Princess because he feels like it was all his fault that he got her pregnant then “forced” her to go with him to the battlefield (he didnt). No one tells Maxi that she miscarried until her horrible father goes to visit her and shames her for miscarrying her child. Theres more but my memory is fuzzy about the other details. Feel free to correct me, as its been a while since I read the books.
