Why is it okay for a character to act like a complete piece of trash towards children simply because that child said a few rude words? Is it okay because those words were said to the protagonist?

Well… isn’t it rather obvious that the princess dressed up that short mercenary as him? Then she probably used her ability to draw to create a picture of the prince that would allow her to disguise the guys face. Also, take note that “the prince” has that tracking brooch on him. In other word, she is using the mercenary as bait to lure out people that are going to try and assassinate him.
