Seems like the mermaids aren’t the bad guys in this story coz its told in the perspective of someone that’s lived most of their lives in a human kingdom. It just smells like propaganda. like Rococochoco said, the mermaids hearts probably give them powers of some sort.

That’s probably what’ll happen since it’s pretty clear that the emperor has no intention on letting her leave the central villa. The best option would be to get his majesty’s permission to go outside since who knows what could happen if she gets caught during the escapade or has a run-in with some bad people. Of course, since the emperor still needs her until she turns 18, even if she is caught she won’t be sentenced to death. But she’ll definitely be punished in the form of further seclusion. The worst part is that she has no idea of what the world beyond the gates is like which makes escaping all the more difficult.
