Well, the maid is certainly not innocent in this. She should have noticed that the mother’s health deteriorated after drinking that “tonic”. And even then she kept this tonic a secret just because a child told her, and she continued to put it into the tea secretly (!) as well, instead of at least talking about it to the (grown-up) doctor when he was visiting lately?
