I get that it’s annoying to read for so long, but from childhood she was manipulated to believe she was worthless, undeserving, and inferior until the day she died by someone she cared for deeply and developed an intense inferiority complex towards. She thinks her magic was the inferior of the two and there was no evidence indicating otherwise, not when her sister was so dazzling and “special” by comparison. The duke’s family fell victim to this manipulation (which seems like it was more than meets the eye). You can’t just overcome years of mistrust and abuse in the place you called home, not while being used and manipulated by the only one who seemed to care about you. That kind of distrust needs more than just a little kindness and reassuring to undo, realistically it needs therapy. The fact that she’s depressed and no longer wants to live blinds her to her surroundings because, quite frankly, she doesn’t give a fuck about figuring things out, she just wants it to be over. The only thing I can think of that might give her the strength to step forward is if she gets assurance that bitch isn’t coming back and maybe if the gem responds well to her at lease some of the confidence she does not currently have.
