Someone needs to hit him on the head. Honestly, I just want there to be a moment where he realizes what’s in front of him. For example, maybe MC almost dies and he needs to save her somehow. Perhaps that’d convince him to be present for her before it’s too late.

The only thing I can think of is it is an unreliable narrator. It could be that the dukes wife was kidnapped and she escaped. Tried to get help from that count but the count kept her and the daughter as a slave. Because the mother being weak she couldn’t find a way to escape with the FL.
