i normally try not to think too hard about a lot of the problematic content in these sorts of stories because lbr, i’d be reading a different genre if i needed my fiction to be morally upright
but like
there’s something that just feels gross about going from a scene with a slave-prisoner-of-war who will now have to train in hardship to learn the sword and currently has no will of his own that then switches to scene to that slaves ‘master’ being upset over maybe losing a diamond mine
yes, i know she’s trying to find a way to free him from his bonds and the overarching narrative of the story is anti-slavery but like
that transition, very gross
slave leading a hard life –> master upset cuz shes gonna lose a diamond mine

idk like i said, i know these types of stories tend to just use slavery as a random trope and don’t really assign it the actual horror it deserves to be treated as and i know im just reading a light-hearted story about a girl who bakes at a palace while getting a found family/love interest
but just yikes.
ngl i sort of wish these stories just wouldnt use slavery as a trope :/ if you’re going to involve something so horrible into your world building, maybe actually address the seriousness of it????
(it doesnt help that the beginning of the chapter is all about how the emperor dude is a good grandpa and its just…. uuuhhhh… ya’ll know that he’s the one who would have the power to end slavery, right???? literal racist grandpa over here :/ ugh)
