I don’t really agree with fl on her “treat people as numbers” statement. Each human is precious and beautiful, except for her mom, whatever becauty she once had, her nasty attidude and abusiveness killed it.

The emperor didn’t steal the marquess wife. And the marquess didn’t sell his wife for a mine.
She was with the emperor first & to give her assests & a title he arranged for an old marquess to marry his mistress.
That’s why Lawrence is the first born.
The emperor probably told Miraila to have a kid with the marquess later on.
So that she could secure the estate when he would die by having an official heir.
Otherwise the extended family would have more claim to the marquessate than Miraila herself.
