Lawrence abused Lysia because he was a pos with an inferiority/superiority complex. He hated that she was popular with the people, that his legitimacy came from her. Like Tia said, he believes that the world naturally belongs to him and he’s the victim for not being given everything. Even when meeting Lysia, he never asked for her name. Whatever he felt for her in both lives, it’s not love nor even romantic twisted obsession, it’s just gross man pain bullshit.
I think it was stated in the earlier chapters that Laurence/Lawrence hated Lysia because she was beloved by the people, right? I don’t give two shits about him. I want to know how Lysia feels about it.
Maybe that’s why Lawrence hated Lysia before coz when Lysia was the Saint she kept healing people knowing that it will kill her. She killed herself and not coz she was married to Lawrence.
