Oooh I really hope that he went crazy after his death BECASE he truly loved her and was obsessed with bringing her back using the Saint somehow (and it worked because it brought back her reincarnated soul to her past body and she is just mistakenly thinking that she read all of this in a ‘novel’ or something similar).
If nothing else, I would BET that “I just wanted to live happily with you, my love” was towards her, not the Saint or anyone actually present in that moment 🤔

Ok, hazy memory and two different depressions going through the brain, but literally impossible to read the duke from the novel timeline as anything of than a devout husband who’s wife died and him going insane trying to bring her back and later dying wishing to be with her.
