June_Rosario23: you are so right! A perfect analysis. One can feel defeated, depression can be hidden behind the smile. Being far from harmful conditions can improve the situation, but it doesn’t always solve it.

True but she is also now dealing with the whole nation thinking she is a criminal scumbag. The drs and servants look at her like “why is she still here and not dead yet?” And also talk behind her back about how supposedly horrible she is, maybe within hearing distance since they didn’t refrain when the ml was near enough to hear them. And now, to her, her savior seems to dislike her like a burden. She’s been betrayed by those who raised her and the one she loved for over a decade and made to feel like it was her fault. I’m guessing that wasn’t the only time she was made to feel at fault while growing up cuz that behavior is developed over time, not instantly as far Ik. Remember, she kicked herself down even after just meeting the princess for the first time, thinking she looked too horrid to greet her and that she could be “compared to the princess”. She did live well as a barmaid but that was probably thx to being away from the factors that made her miserable, surrounded instead by friendly customers and a kind and loyal boss. But now she has been pulled right back into the factors of misery. Fabian being anywhere nearby but he never helped her once, the princess that fabian said he loved has made her deemed scum by the whole country and been trying to have her killed, and those who raised her never helped her, took her side, or anything, not even try to comfort her after what happened.

… Why IS she like this? She seemed perfectly fine working as a barmaid, but she was ready to throw her life away after being dumped. She didn’t like living in the forest with the mercenaries, but she never made herself a life outside of that. It seems like they want her to be unfortunate and broken purely to drive the plot forward with no care to her actual character.
Honestly, they’d better come up with a tragic pre-merc backstory to make this make sense.
