I doubt if it’s out of love for the FL, he looks and sounds way more cunning and shrewd than someone capable of having sincere and beautiful sentiments such as love.
It’s just not in their nature.
Such characters are way more calculating than sentimental, so even if they do take an interest in someone it’s more of an obsession rather.
So, I reaaaally wish this ‘saint’ guy who is obviously using underhanded methods to get the FL and the CP separated for his own gains and obsessions IS NOT THE ML!!!!
He is carefully and meticulously manipulating everything and everyone for the single reason of his own interest!!!
Ruining people and relationships is nothing to such a person.
How can someone like this be a love-interest unless his counterpart is on an equal standing, a manipulator shrewd and greedy kind of woman– which our FL isn’t one of course.
I think it’s a POWER-struggle more than anything, since it’s been mentioned that the empire and the temple are practically enemies.
This ‘saint’ wants the ‘True oracle princess’ for himself, which is our FL.
So he staged everything in order to snatch her away from the CP.
He used a stupid, greedy poor noble’s daughter and ‘made’ her into a fake ‘oracle princess’ just to get the real one for himself!

It’s obsession at best.
Therefore,

Separating two people who have loved each other for so long, albeit having communication-problems– doesn’t sit right with me however you put it.
