I really like that part of the reason he’s coming to like her is because they’ve both been horribly harmed and neglected by people who “love” them. It makes it more reasonable for why he starts to develop further feelings for her because he can link what feelings he does have (neglect, betrayal, resentment, etc.) to her own towards her family
