So here is my guess, our girl is daughter of the previous emperor and emperess. The Chase family took her in at a young enough age she didn’t clearly remember her real parents and at a time where her parents were technically still alive and just wanted their daughter in hiding as a precaution. They did it for probably a combination of an initial payout and the belief that the royal family owing you a favour would be a big deal, but when the tides turned they were too deep into the farce of hiding Irene that rather than be grateful for them betraying her to the current emperor they were concerned the current emperor would have the family killed or banished full-cloth for the initial betrayal no matter the follow-up. Current puppet-emperor is there as a representative of the noble-faction. Previous imperial couple was probably about to set some reforms which would have affected the nobles making them usurp them.
So the previous empress must have planted those flowers since this current emperor is alone ( for 23 year😂) Who supported this rebellion and why did they put this guy on the throne in the first place? All this gold is so vain I cant help but think the current emperor is so insecure
