His own mother plotted against him and there were enemies at every corner so he obviously had no choice but to demote them of their status to survive. If anything, he was merciful enough to allow a legitimate candidate for the throne to leave unscathed, 80% of royal siblings from history didn’t even hesitate to kill each other off in brutual ways.
The plot twist really was unexpected though ? really didn’t expect that.
