Yeah, it sucks that her feelings were hurt, but this isn’t them attacking her or her character – just gossiping about the nobility.
From their perspective, an orphan was taken in by the duke and now he’s presenting her at the coming of age ball. it’s a real “Cinderella story” of course they’d want to dream about it happening to them. If they have the wrong idea, then the duke making his position known will clear things up.
Like, they aren’t even bad-mouthing her at all. Her brothers and the servants and the other nobility frame her as a greedy person trying to take a place meant for someone else. They just think she had some good fortune.
So is he going to be a crown prince or something? The masters of the tower so he gets the first dance? I have no doubt he’ll be asking her for the dance but how is he able to 😖
