That would explain why she took it so hard when she woke up and found that Emilia had left so soon after the funeral. Lots of regrets for things she said and did while the girls were young.
This also makes me wonder if this version of Emilia hasn’t become the second half of Elodie too. They said Emilia was Ophelia’s shadow and only got things in life because of her. Now Elodie is feeling like shes in the same boat. Only getting the life she has because she looks and sounds like Ophelia.
Emilia is probably the first person to stand up for Elodie like that. “Of course she can’t say no to you.” It really doesn’t seem like there’s a true villainess among the two girls. Both feel like they’re only being kept around for Ophelia’s memory and both want to be their own person.
The suitors, especially Edmund, seem like they always liked Emilia best but never were able to admit it. They were always meant to have eyes for Ophelia and they felt they had to pretend so at least. Edmund seems like he lashes out because he’s in denial that it was really Emilia this whole time. Elodie looks like Ophelia but it’s not enough.
I think she was trying to be loyal to her dying daughter. Like, her daughter doesn’t have any health and won’t have a future. She didn’t want her daughter to “lose” her mother too.
But she was completely out of line and shouldn’t have tried like that to a child. Hope she remembers this forever and never ever forgive herself!
