honestly, it’s such a breath of fresh air to have a protag who actually thinks of the children around her as children. so many protags don’t take responsibility as the adult in the room like she is doing and it always gets under my skin (also a lot of protags get caught up in petty child drama and im sitting here like “….are you srsly beefing with a ten year old? you’re in your thirties.”
in contrast, she accepts that of course a scared and abused child is gonna lash out a bit and needs to be protected regardless.
overall this series is fairly typical, but i really enjoyed that specific aspect. it always makes me side-eye protags when they’re supposedly an adult, but they can’t be fucked to care about the wellness of children :/
also i like that the duke is also protective of his sons (and bad at it lol). too many of these have the father only be protective of the daughter and every damn time im like “someone rescue those sons from that shitty dad” and again, side-eye the protag for being okay with a situation like that. the duke is awkward and bad at showing he cares, but he’s bad at it with all his kids. he’s not the perfect father for her and then a shit dad to his sons. he’s a mediocre dad to them all LOL
