Tbh since the old maid called the duchess a “fake”, she is likely a illegitimate child and/or someone brought to the dukedom in the place of another by the countdom she is from.

Thinks to consider:
1. She likes duke and duke likes her
2. Even considering that this is cold country dukedom is rich (often in those stories north is cold but is rich in minerals, precious metals and have lots of animals/beasts which also fetch high price) so it would be rather weird that she is going out (the duches) to help someone.
3. She may be a spy but for who ? New king ? But then why bad maid was spying on duches ?
Anyway this manga is realy complex, lots of plots. Anyway We will have to wait for at least 10-15 more chapters to know what duches is doing in her “free time” and for them to notice that Clarice is rare golem magician. It will be funny to see lawfull upright duke get confused what to do about girl he have to kill when she will become 18 years old 😀

I like that the Duchess has her own little side-plot going on.
Often, in these child-focused stories, it seems like the entire world revolves around the protag – especially the lives of those close to them.
