one of the “fun” parts of being a teacher, doctor, craftsmen, etc.:
Even though you SHOULD be both “neutral” and “equal to the parent” (cause you´re the one who basically got “hired”, has the expertise the parent/family doesn´t and therefore have the same or even higher say then them) that´s only in theory. For anyone who teaches the status of the family matter, more than the well-being of the child up to a certain point. Simply out of self-protection. You can only wiggle your ideals and hope that when they “fit reality” (i.e. are actually do-able) you still can be proud of what you do, instead of being revolted.
Even today that´s true: Most parents might be “only” able to give you a head-ache with their shrieking accusations (“My child is better than what this test says! How dare you not teach better!” “My child would never do xyz!!!”), but there are plenty that can get you fired. And this is a story with nobles, where “influence” is far easier to wield than now with the internet (since you do kinda have to mind what the general public thinks) and WAAAYYY less (open) rights for the wealthy/title-holders. And believe it or not: Nowadays getting fired can STILL make it hard up to impossible to find another job in any profession, where the new boss wants a writing from the old boss about how reliable (and not troublesome) this hire is. And high-rank schools? The “bosses” of those go for a drink together, one call and you can forget it. And in the society the story is in? One raised eyebrow from a high-rank noble, one bag of gold from a lower-rank and someone gets fired if they are lucky, and more if they aren´t.
ESPECIALLY if the only reason “the apple of their parents eye” got a scolding was for a “mere fallen noble child”. Same as today, if the rich kid gets scolded for bullying the scholarship kid. That´s why even the most dedicated teacher either learns to sniff out the point where the parents of the bully will accept it “went to far” while keeping the bullied kid as save as possible, or they accept that they can get into trouble themselves. Same goes for the director: You can want a “proper” school without ranks as much as you want, but a school is too connected. It needs food, staff, materials, the money for all that, and most of all: Parents WILLING to send their kid there in the first place. So if one rich folk goes to their friends with the same “common sense” of “MY child got in trouble for NOTHING” then the school itself can lose a lot, from children to funds, to outright being refused when buying things cause someone “pulled a string”.
So yeah, even those who love their job of teaching, being a doctor, handling requests as a craftsperson, all that, they all WILL put up with a lot, out of sheer necessacity (starting with: you kinda need money to live, and a job to get money). And a kid that “doesn´t yet” get bullied physically (or worse: the bruises simplly don´t show yet), that kid is on it´s own. Both “back then” and “nowadays”, unless the school is independent or under such a big wing (like a royal patron) that they can´t be threatend. And isn´t corrupt of course.
