I truly think dude is also a victim of mind control. The witch even said she has a harder time keeping him under control. He’s trying to resist and break free. In the 1st chapter, his eyes look similar to the one’s that were under complete control of the witch.

it would make sense if he retained some slight bit of control just for camouflage purposes. that, and i thought it was a little weird that he’d be so keen on keeping her alive if possible in the alpha timeline. either he’s slightly resistant to it, or she felt the need to leave him some free will to keep her cover under better wraps.
