Obviously he was really a puppet. One cannot simply resist the magic of a more powerful being. In ttrpgs sure but thats just to grant a fighting chance. Realistically thats not a thing. The more powerful you are the more powerful the magic period. He was lucky to have a magic item that was equal to or stronger than the mind control used on him.
