It’s a combination of him being overprotective and being upset of the fact that the duchess is leaving. Those maids said the words he cannot even tell the duchess directly, so he’s having a mixed emotions of helplessness (although he want to cling on her, he cant because he want to respect her decision) and sadness (although he’s trying to be mature about the situation, he cant deny that he’s upset, it must have irritated him, the fact that what the maids said was true)
