Idk about here because the things have been added and the story elongated, partly to flesh out the characters more as the novel is really short. In the novel, if I remember correctly(because it’s been a year since I read it) Celphi’s mom shows up after hearing about how serious the Grand Duke is of Lariette. She interrupts him carrying her back into the mansion and snuggling(I think kissing too?). The reason for her visit is to tell Lariette to leave the Dukes side as nothing good can come from his family. She says that her existence was miserable because she got involved with them, ended up a widow with a monster for a child that she can’t touch and doesn’t want Lariette to suffer that same fate. IMO she’s a really shitty, selfish mom if anyone can even call her that. Poor Celphi suffered a lot because she wasn’t there for him and rejected him. Her and her shitty opinions should have just continued to stay away.
Whatever her tragic past was doesn’t excuse child abandonment and neglect 🤷♀️ She’s just lashing out at him as a form of escapism from her own actions
If I’m not mistaken, she became crazy after her husband’s death blaming on the curse of the family making her hate the whole family including her own son and be afraid of them because of the curse. She doesn’t know that fl know about curse and she won’t die, she thinks the family is using fl who is innocent. Little bit misunderstanding but don’t think there is bad intention other than hating the family because her husband died from the curse(I think he mistakely consume another member’s blood which killed him since the potency of poison differs from family member to member and their blood can kill each other depending on whose blood is more poisonous). Whether she has good intentions or not regarding fl but she sure can be annoying since she is misunderstanding and just making assumptions from her experience and thinking it’s facts.
