I feel like sum of y’all missing the point of when it will still hurt, even just a little bit if your not really father figure but still father cheats with another woman right?
Well, it really depends on the situation ig so I can’t say that confidently 🐣

Tbh.. branden probably already sees himself as a child abandoned by his father. He last saw his dad when he was too young to remember him after 3 years, but he knew he had a dad and that his dad left him and his mother to do who knows what. And suddenly after 3 years, his dad comes back claiming to be his father when he barely remembers him and the first impressions are that his dad is violent and abusive rather than kind and loving. The kid has already had to witness his father mistreat his mother as well as the servants that he sees as family. So Brandon probably would wonder things like why were they abandoned, why is his father like this, if this is how it’d be now then why couldn’t his father stay gone?..

As a mother myself, I get Shirley not wanting to hurt her son but the constant emotional toll that fighting between parents causes a child is a real concern. He’s likely to hold resentment towards his dad who so far the most aggressive. She def just needs to go back to where she was. Both her and Brandon were doing seemingly great on their own.

Why does she have it in her head that her son will have an issue if her husband cheats? I mean the kid barely even considers the guy his dad.

Hmmm. I agree with Shirley, she SHOULD be able to live by herself with her son. After all, if she chooses the viscount when she had no other options, is that really a “choice”. A relationship built on unstable ground like that rarely flourishes.

I dont want her to end up with anyone if she doesn’t want that either. She just wants what’s best for her son and getting rid of the garbage husband would be a great first step and I think the cheating scandal is a great plan, after all it’s not like her son acknowledges him as a real father after all this time. And letting Brandon be continuously exposed to his “father” abusing her or him, in any form, isn’t going to help him in the long run either. Young kids will remember that the most

ooofff wasnt expecting to get a peak at the characters emotional and mental state in such a clear way so that’s awesome to read.
Her worries over Brandon’s opinion on George is understandable but totally counterproductive to Brandon mental health.
She can explain it to Brandon about wanting a divorce to his dad coz the kid is smart enough to understand. Their current plan runs the risk of Brandon getting stuck in the middle and being a witness/victim to George’s hostile response to their fake affair which, imo is so much traumatizing.

Like how this chapter took a moment to focus on the exhaustion a person faces after constantly fighting day in and day out. At the end of the day, one truly does feel hollow from the constant worry, especially if others get involved

I feel for her so much ?? poor thing can’t even catch a break

I appreciate them grounding her emotions. Sometimes it gets lost in the bickering, but the actual suffering of the situation is awful. Of course you have to prioritize your kid, but the mental drain of not being able to be selfish in the face of a horrible situation hurts.
