If that isn’t the dumbest reason for distancing himself, omg I’m going to lose her I better run away ??? and if that’s how he feels now then he must have not cared about her at all in the original or after she died. Poor original Lotti her father is stupid and neglectful to her, but after she dies this idiot decides to take care of a different little girl that is completely human and would die sooner than Lotte so what was the point of that? Other than the adopted daughter looking like the mother there’s no reason since he’s such a coward
True, it is a stupid reason to run away but let’s think about this from his point of view.
After losing everything important to him and finally closing off his feelings permanently, here comes his child who he eventually loves and grows close to. And knowing that she is a human and he is an immortal, he will have to live through loss once again.
He isn’t “negligent” or “stupid”, he’s just scared. He’s afraid of going through the same pain he once felt before. Whether its stupid or not, running away is just a basic instinct for some people. And i think the reason he ignored her in the past was because of that fear, and later regretting that, he adopted a child who looked like his past lover (or someone similar to lottie) in order to get rid of the guilt.
Therefore, yes he’s being a coward but a lot of people close their hearts so they don’t get hurt. And i think its the same case for him.
