I really dislike it when authors make religion look bad. Granted, there are bad people in different religions, but there are also lots of good people. So making religions seem like the bad guys always irks me.
The inclusion of Islamic terrorism was so out of place and unnecessary. I know it was based on an actual incident but it’s still uncomfortable to read. Why not food poisoning or ingredients included that is not acceptable to eat leading to a boycott or a ban? Islam and muslims feel like they are acceptable punching bag in fiction. I don’t think the author is Islamaphobic, but still this came across as tasteless (pun unintended).
On a lighter note, seeing Min Hwan getting punched put a smile on my face.
Okay, as a side note I’d like to say something about the situation that arose in this chapter about the Koreans kidnapped by an Islamic extremist group. The story is currently 10 years in the past. This should be around the year 2009 based on the messages Jiwon received from Eun Ho on her social media blog. I was in high school in 2009 and I vaguely remembered something in the international news around time that was related to this. I went to look it up and found that this was based on an actual kidnapping case that occurred in 2007 when 23 South Korean Christian missionaries/church volunteers were kidnapped off of a bus by the Taliban and detained for six weeks. Nineteen of them were reportedly released and flown back to South Korea after a $20 million ransom was paid for their return. There’s some very interesting (often very challenging) history behind Christianity evangelicalism in countries where Christianity is not the dominant religion. I’m sad that this was the moment the author decided to highlight in the manhwa since depictions of people of the Islamic faith in fiction are so rare and many of them are quite derogatory, demeaning, & not at all a reflection of the faith as a whole. Sadly, it is not terribly surprising considering the time period in which this story took place. I would have preferred a different international issue be addressed instead that would have lead to the downfall of Director Kim without further adding to the negative view of people of the Islamic faith. Fingers crossed this is more adequately explained in the next chapter.
