Read manhwa Magical Girl 78 Years Old Ma Bok-Hee / 마법소녀 78세 마복희 / 魔法少女ポッキは78歳
Discovering a hidden talent at death’s door, 78-year-old Ma Bok-hee embarks on an unlikely new career path: becoming a Magical Girl! After a life of hardship leads to a terminal diagnosis, she accepts a life-extending offer to ensure she sees her granddaughter reach adulthood. Though stumbling over the terminology—asking, “Magi… what girl? You sayin’ if I do that, I can live ’til my grandbaby’s all grown up? Alright then, I’ll do it!”—she embraces her new role with determination. Now, a rejuvenated Bok-hee must defend East Village from the mysterious ‘Doksu’ and his corrupted villains in this spirited tale of a grandmother finding her true calling at the very end of her life.

The basic approach – old woman turns into magical girl – looked promising at a first glance, but this manhwa is not a comedy (at chapter 4 so far)! Instead this story has unfittingly many totally depressing, sometimes scary and also simply boring segments. There are very few funny moments in actual fact.
The art is good, albeit not outstanding; the proportions of human beings are well drawn, but many panels are done without any background, and the coloring is kept simple.
The characters are not coherent in my opinion, especially the female lead acts weirdly teenage-like even though she’s already a grandmother and took care of her granddaughter for many years. We’re told that she’s been through a lot and shouldered much responsibility – so why does she act so timidly and like someone without much life experience?
The magical mascot does not save this story – it’s ugly in my opinion, and also the exact contrary of a comical relief. In fact, it takes itself and the whole absurd plot about magical girls, monsters and the heavenly realm super seriously, plus it acts grumpily all the time which makes it rather unlikeable…
