If the only things the female lead did to her son was neglect and some scolding, but not beating (I think that part was done by the maids?) then it’s quite understandable that the little one can forgive his mother after a few weeks.
That does not mean the trauma won’t surface again now and then! But in general it is possible to mend a broken relationship because little (!) children can forget and forgive rather quickly. And most are very eager to be loved by their parents…
I had a love-hate-relationship with my father myself – being beaten out of the blue for no apparent reason was hard to cope with; but since he also had a nice side, I was always ready to get along with him then. Except that I flinched automatically whenever he raised his hands, even if he wanted to pat my head. Not everybody is like this, I know… but some are.

as an ex-abused kid, i absolutely hated getting hugged by my parents as a child. it was mortifying and scary, even when the embrace was meant lovingly. i know everyone has a different experience but my suspension of disbelief dropped so fast when both abuse victims were like “yep i wanted a hug”. i liked hugs, i was a tactile child, but you could not pay me to enjoy a hug from the same person who beat my ass lmfao helll nooo
