Do people really not google this? I know the ways to maintain hygiene in the eras before were nothing like what we have now but they DID have hygiene practices. Sponge baths were the norm then every day. Powders and oils were used to help the hair from getting dirty and prevent you from getting lice. Not to mention you changed lots of linen were used as undergarments so that the dresses they wore didn’t actually make contact with their bare skin (hence why gowns could be worn more than once), plus they liked changing their clothes for every meal. Soap existed way before the Victorian Era! Vikings used soap and bathed regularly! Istg if you wanna comment something about them being completely unhygienic during these times, at least have the decency to search and learn more about what they did to keep their bodies and themselves clean. Sure the practices of hygiene are very much different from how we have today, but they weren’t so completely unhygienic and smelly that people would actually faint from the smell alone. If anything waste management was the prime reason of such stenches, and that mostly happened in extremely concentrated areas of people, like central London. The people in those days had their own ways of maintaining their hygiene, and just because it is vastly different from how we do it today DOESN’T mean it was COMPLETELY unsanitary and unhealthy to live in. Educate yourself and try to do a little digging first before you dive head first into commenting about how unhygienic they were.
