I think, and this is just my theory, that fl’s stepfather was obsessed with fl’s mother and she went crazy about it because she couldn’t stand him any more, so she wanted to leave him, but he wouldn’t (if I don’t have you no-one will) and he hanged her in front of fl to show her what might happen to her if she tried to leave, so now he’s redirected all his obsession onto fl.
