Her sister was dating the prince but he got murdered. She had a one night stand with the Duke.
She then made it seem like her sister lost her virtue that night and they had to flee the capitol in shame (so her sister wouldn’t e targeted by the murderer.
(Speculation) To support that story, she passed her own illegitimate child (Duke’s son) off as her sister’s. Her sister died “in childbirth” (<- no idea what the actual cause is)
