I remember reading that the corsets at the time were usually tied too tightly on purpose to emphasize a smaller waist and bigger bust. Thus the typical fainting. Also that they were typically made to support the dress, not sure how accurate on that one. My gf has a corset and loves to wear it and does not have issues as good ones now are not typically torture to wear.
