i know these stories always thrive off the idea that upper crust nobility magically forgets how to hobnob correctly so they’ll antagonize the FL but it’s so goddamn tiring when you could surround her with three dimensional people who are most definitely not her friends but are loaded with individual competing priorities. these people may have plenty to gain by making friends with a favored queen, but being a bitch to the empress’s face? social suicide. if they can’t rule out her future usefulness, they have to play nice or at least ignore her completely. inviting her someplace to mock her is how you fuck yourself sideways in politics. the author has no understanding of politics and yet wants us the reader to believe that anyone in this situation is canny or to be taken seriously without the chops to back it up. IF YOU WANT YOUR CHARACTERS TO BE CONSIDERED SMART, YOU HAVE TO BE SMART ENOUGH TO WRITE THEM
