There isn’t an issue with forgetting now. It’s not like the past will change, and it frees their emotions up. They’ll still know that the bad guy was the bad guy, and that they needed to stop him, and that he used and manipulated Chloe for most of her life. They’ll still remember that they love each other and did everything to both protect the other and be together. Their past life memories helped them make better choices, but they aren’t needed now that the problem is dealt with.
In terms of logical storytelling it’s a huge issue.
But purpose is to evoke an emotional response at the drama, in exchange for rational plot.
