I don’t really think Rian has that kind of feelings for Riarte, I think he knows she’s the actual source of his power. Riarte told him when he came to visit her… “You do it, not for concern for me but because without me you cannot use your power” (not literallly but something like that or around those lines). I think that since he is aware of his lack of control and power, he wants to keep Riarte close to him so no one knows he’s not really the awakened heir everyone belives. He doens’t want to loose his status as future duke, that’s all, it’s not romantic… it’s just for power that he wants to keep Riarte close to him.
