So from what I can understand, a war occurred that had the climax occur at the MC family lands. The religious Dominato faction was resentful of their loss and the rising support of the imperial faction that centered around the new king. The empress dowager decided to strengthen her aristocratic faction by combining with the old dominato faction, creating the new and more evil aristocratic faction. This caused the resentment of the old faction towards the MC’s family to seep into the aristocratic faction, as the loss of the war centered around them. When the empress dowager’s family started to weaken she decided to fix her family by forcing MC’s mom the marry her son. This was also a stab at the Makaira family since MC’s mom was engaged to MC’s dad, the heir to Makaira. That failed, causing her family to fall and causing more resentment towards Makaira.

It is later explained in next chapter that the reason she targets MC is because from an outside point of view she is the weakest. MC’s dad and mom at magically strong. MC’s older brother is gifted with swordsmanship. Younger brother hasn’t reached the age for magical peers, so is constantly monitored by adults. MC is at the age where she has a bit of independence due to her having magical abilities provides some protection, making her exposed to more openings. Since no one is aware of her strength of powers she seems easy to target. She also looks the most like her mother, who the empress dowager resents. She has also become the specific target due to her meddling in the empress dowager plans with the young prince. The empress hadn’t really bothered MC until she got in her way.
While the continued resentment due to an old war seems dumb it is not entirely unrealistic. You can look at the continued resentment of the Makaira like the resentment after the American civil war. The south, who lost, would even teach in schools about the war calling it “the northern aggression”. Resentment can get passed down.

It still doesn’t make any sense lmao Maybe it’s the translation but is the empress dowager from the country that lost the war? I don’t get what that has to do with the current state of things if it happened so long ago? Even if she’s from that country, does she think killing a child is going to accomplish anything? Does she think it will start another war? ? I just don’t get it.
