From the writing you can tell the father will be forgiven and be ML. What child would be thinking about their abusive father that left them all alone and makes no effort to be with them when a different father figure has shown up and started treating them better?

it’s actually quite common. i work with abused children and they frequently will make every excuse for a parent and they actually worry a lot more about their parents well-being than their own, especially when they’re as young as Leah.
i actually thought that the moment was well-written because of how accurate it is to many neglected children who crave the love of their parents. they’re just not old enough yet to conceptualize that their parent is the problem in a proper way and so they worry about their parents. Kids are just kinda pre-programmed to love their parents (thus why any kid who actively hates their parents im just like……. dude, how badly did you fuck up, kids will forgive an INSANE amount of abuse and your kids hates you?? holyshit get dead)
