Think about it – how many businesses does she own? If she set up a program where all the day-old bread and other foodstuffs were donated to the slums from every restaurant/bakery under her employ, the impact would be tremendous.
Also, products that are flawed, damaged, out of fashion, etc. She could donate them or sell them on the cheap. Whether it’s soaps for hygiene, spare fabric for warmth, or writing implements like the charcoal that people can use to educate themselves.
She could set up shelters for people to stay in or encourage her businesses to hire the disadvantaged.
All studies on things like Universal Basic Income show that giving the disadvantaged more financial freedom actually improves the economy because, unlike the wealthy, they’re actually going to spend it.
Also, I didn’t say to just give them money anyways. Literally just do what she’s doing with this one bakery but on a larger scale. It wouldn’t hurt business, because the people willing to wait for stale and sub-par food/goods, wouldn’t be able to buy it fresh in the first place.
People need more in life than just some stale rolls and some scraps of cloth and paper. Have you seen the hierarchy of needs? Once the basics like food and shelter are provided, people can take the opportunity to strive for the higher-levels of the pyramid.
