I think (historically correct) titles are given by the king. So it make sense that they’re lower status because higher status marquis -duke are usually blood relative (ex of current British royal family). It’s actually possible that lower status are much richer than them if they do trading/export/import (merchants). I’m not really sure if there’s poor duke or something because they usually given a large/wide plot of land to rule.
This is the first time I’m seeing a family that controls basically half the economy of the country having a lesser status than some poor marquis. Usually, in such novels, you could literally buy a higher status with enough money and it’s not like they lack any resources.
